During the 1950s and 1960s, many artists and poets were drawn to the Abu Tor neighborhood, then a poor border neighborhood, through which passed the city line. Walk through the picturesque alleyways of the neighborhood and see the houses where the artists, and their stories, lived, and try to understand how the neighborhood’s physical surroundings and personalities influenced their work.
Examine the works of artists such as Naomi Henrik, Leon Engelsberg, Hanna Peiser Ben-David, and others, and listen to the poetry of Yehuda Amichai and Hedva Harechavi, who feature Abu Tor in their works. During the tour, learn about Abu Tor today, and find out if the border still passes through the heart of the neighborhood.
Tour inspired by the exhibit “Jerusalem School”, presented in the new gallery at the Tower of David Jerusalem Museum and at HaMiffal center for art and culture, in honor of 100 years of Jerusalem art.
Meeting Point: La’iver Garden before Beit Micha, 4 HaMefaked St., Abu Tor neighborhood (Givat Hananya)
