Everyone’s heard of the Russian Compound, but in Jerusalem there is also a French “Compound”. During the 19th century next to the walls of the Old City, the French Catholics erected a number of buildings that created a unique complex for themselves. In order to ease the entry of pilgrims to the area, the Ottoman rulers broke through the wall and built the New Gate.
Visit the Notre Dame compound and a surprising museum that houses the Shroud of Turin, see the St. Louis Hospital and the Chapel of St. Vincent de Paul, and ascend to the observation point of the Notre Dame monastery.
