Jerusalem boasts many homes of important influential people who worked in and contributed to the city. In this series, get to know these personalities and their works by visiting their homes and seeing what is happening in the surrounding area today.
The Kokia family immigrated to Israel from the country of Georgia in the 1870’s, and settled on Ha-Yehudim Street in the Old City. The family, one of the most affluent in the city, was known for their generosity and their contributions to charities. They purchased properties in the Old City as well as along Jaffa Road and the area known as the “Jerusalem Triangle”. Among the family’s properties were the Tel Aviv Hotel (later the Ron Hotel), the Palatin Hotel, and the Pillars Building. The Kokia family, with extensive family ties to the Valero and Elyashar families, lived for many years in a lovely home on HaRav Agan St.
Visit the house and meet with a representative of the visitors’ center there today, and hear about the Kokia family and the building’s current function. Afterwards, tour the city center, focusing on the Kokia house and the development of the city center since its construction.
