Focus on how it shapes the view of division of the city in light of the sources from the Frankish Crusader Period, and an examination of how the view of Jerusalem as divided into quarters was implemented to define urban spaces during earlier periods.
- Dr. Netta Amir, Hebrew University, doctoral student of Professor Ellenblum, presents: Religious Experiential Space – the Source of the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem
The path in Jerusalem, known by the name “Via Dolorosa” or the “Way of the Cross”, is one of the prominent holy paths in the city. Because of its characteristic spaces, narratives, and rituals, and also due to the historical circumstances through which it has developed and changed its shape and content, it offers a unique experience in the history of the urban and religious space of Jerusalem. The lecture examines the process of establishing the route of the path, and will demonstrate the role of cultural memory, collective agency, and creative activity in the construction of religious spaces in a changing urban environment.
After the lecture, between 11:00am-1:00pm, there will be tours in the Old City guided by top researchers in the field: Prof. Dan Bahat, Dr. Shlomo Lotan, Dr. Orit Ramon, Dr. Amichai Schwartz. Cost of each tour: 40 NIS. To choose one of the tours, click here.
