Eternal Dialogue

Fall 1996

Jerusalem through the camera lens of eleven renowned photographers from Israel and abroad, including: Thomas Ruff from Germany, Mike & Doug Starn from the USA, Emmet Gowin, Linda Connor and others. These artists’ photographs were shown side by side with ones by prominent Israeli photographers such as Joel Kantor, Barry Frydlender, Oded Yedaya and others.

Jerusalem has attracted both professional and amateur photographers ever since the camera came into use. They have been documenting the city for some 150 years. Jerusalem’s special light, its fresh air and the deep emotional charge hidden among its stones have always presented photographers with a challenge. The exhibition Eternal Dialogue showcased a rich collection of works handling daily life in Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem School of Photography invited the participating photographers with the aim of having them immortalize the city while inspired by their stay in it – not just as a historic and heroic site, but rather as the place where daily, routine life happens. The resulting photography collection reflected a rich image of Jerusalem. The photographers presented new interpretations of the city; each of them drawn to one of Jerusalem’s many facets – religious, cultural, historic, social, political and others.

Exhibition Curators: Nissan Perez – Curator of Photography at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem and Avi Sabag – Director of the Jerusalem School of Photography
