David

The statue of David by Verrocchio was commissioned by Fierro de Medici before his death.  In 1476, the statue was sold to the city of Florence by Fierro’s sons, Lorenzo and Juliano de Medici who wanted to split their father’s inheritance.  The sculptor was influenced by the statue of David by Donatello (also commissioned by Medici) and it stood in the courtyard of the castle of Cosimo de Medici.
