Studio Orient

The Camera Man
“Women and Men Photograph Jerusalem 1900-1950”

A new exhibition at the Tower of David Museum
Curator: Dr. Shimon Lev
Associate Curator: Hamutal Wachtel

Welcome to the Studio Orient!

Up to a century ago, there were hardly any cameras in the home and anyone wanting to have their photo taken visited a professional photographic studio.
Every photographer had painted backgrounds, scenery, clothing and a selection of accessories. Those coming to sit for portrait photos would dress up in their best clothes and be photographed as a memento.
We invite you to go back in time: Dress up as someone from the beginning of the last century using the various clothes, accessories, and backgrounds; choose the photographer or take a self-portrait with your phone and remember, no smiling… no one smiled for the camera in the early twentieth century!

CameraMan2Tag the photo with hashtag #photographers, share via Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, and the best photo will be posted on the museum’s Facebook page.
