the Jewish Quarter

Tour of the

Jewish Quarter in 1948

(In Hebrew)

In preparation for Independence Day: Tour the Old City focusing on the fall of the Jewish Quarter in 1948

On May 28, 1948, exactly two weeks after the declaration of Israel’s independence, the Jewish Quarter fell to the hands of the Arab Legion.  The entire Old City, including the Jewish Quarter and other parts of Jerusalem remained under the control of the Kingdom of Jordan until 1967.

Did the Quarter fall because of military circumstances and the necessities of the situation, or did the Jewish establishment not really want to save it?  We will trace the progression of fighting in the Jewish Quarter up to the capture, and discuss the military circumstances preceding the Quarter’s fall, while addressing the historical significance of the Jewish Quarter in the Israeli Zionist context.
