Over the years the street became a hub for businesses, entertainment and shopping, and along its length governmental institutes were established next to coffee houses, restaurants, theaters and shops. Also, private houses of esteemed families in Jerusalem were built. In the 21st century with the opening of the Jerusalem light rail, the street changed its character and became a wide-open boulevard for pedestrians.
