Boris Schatz was budy founding a national academy of arts in Bulgaria until he met Theodor Herzl and became an enthusiastic Zionist. In 1906, he established the first Hebrew art school, Bezalel, which still operates today in the heart of Jerusalem.

We will take a tour along Bezalel Street and visit the Artists’ House, which once housed the first Hebrew museum and served as a gathering place for the school’s students. We will also visit Schatz’s private home, which is usually closed to the public. There, we’ll get to know Schatz’s character and also learn about his children—Bezalel and Zahara—who were also sculptors and artists. We’ll meet Jimmy Levinson, a descendant of the family. The tour will conclude in the Neve Bezalel neighborhood, founded by Boris Schatz as a residential area for artists and teachers.
