North of the Old City, beyond the walls of Jerusalem from the Second Temple period, lies the “necropolis” – the city of the dead of ancient Jerusalem. We will explore burial niches, ossuaries, and sarcophagi, and visit the monumental tomb of Queen Helena, which a Roman writer compared to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, featuring an extraordinary opening and closing mechanism.
The tour will conclude at the Garden Tomb, an alternative site identified as the burial place of Jesus (the more widely accepted site being the Church of the Holy Sepulchre). This identification was made by the British general known as “Gordon Pasha” – a brave soldier, amateur archaeologist, and Christian mystic – and we will examine whether his claim holds merit: could this indeed be the tomb of Jesus?
