Sift Through Soil from the Kishle Excavations in the Citadel Moat – A Hands-On Archaeological Experience 🪏✨

Join us with your children for a unique opportunity to sift through soil from the archaeological excavations of the historic Kishle building and discover artifacts dating back to the First Temple period—pottery, ceramic fragments, bullae (ancient clay seal impressions), and other finds. Every discovery will be carefully documented and transferred to the Israel Antiquities Authority for further research making you part of the process of preserving Jerusalem’s heritage.

Before the sifting experience, families will enjoy a guided tour of the museum and the historic Kishle.

Program Schedule

Part 1: Guided Museum Tour
Begin with a guided tour in the gallery that tells the remarkable story of Jerusalem through the ages, featuring interactive displays, multimedia presentations, and authentic archaeological finds. Continue to the historic Kishle building, where rare discoveries reveal fascinating stories spanning from the First Temple period to the Jewish underground movements during the British Mandate.

Part 2: Soil Sifting in the Citadel Moat
Head to the citadel moat for a hands-on experience beginning with dry sifting to uncover archaeological finds hidden in the soil. We then move to wet sifting, where the discoveries are soaked and gently washed, followed by sorting, identifying, and discussing the artifacts that you have found!

It’s a little messy but-that’s part of the fun! Please wear closed-toe shoes.

The activity is led by a museum educator and is designed for families with children ages 7–11.
