Jerusalem boasts many homes of important influential people who worked in and contributed greatly to the city. In this series, get to know these personalities and their works by visiting their homes and seeing what is happening in the surrounding area today.
Boris Schatz was working on opening an art institute in Bulgaria until he met Herzl and became a devoted Zionist. In 1906 he established the first Hebrew school for art, Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts, that continues to function in the heart of Jerusalem. Stroll along Bezalel St to the Jerusalem Artists’ House, former home of the school, and visit the private home of Schatz that is generally closed to the public. There we learn about the personage of Schatz and his children, Bezalel and Zahara, who were also sculptors and artists. Enjoy a special meeting with Jimmy Lewensohn, one of the descendents of Boris Schatz.
