Among the different empires that were active in Jerusalem in the 19th century was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Kaiser, noblemen, researchers and adventurers – everyone came to Jerusalem. Institutions were established here, bringing with them modernity and known for their efficiency, such as the Austrian “post”. Learn about the Austrians and the institutions they founded in the city, personalities from the community that were active in Jerusalem, and the contribution of Austrian Jews to the Jewish Quarter.
Hear about the visit of Kaiser Franz Joseph, see the Austrian post building, examine the original model of Jerusalem made by Stephan Illes (not on Saturday’s tour), tour among the sites in the Jewish Quarter connected to the contribution of Austrian Jews, and learn the famous legend about the donation of the dome of the Tiferet Israel Synagogue. Finish at the Austrian Hospice and ascend to its roof, for an expansive observation point over the Old City.
