Among the different empires that were active in Jerusalem in the 19th century was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Kaiser, noblemen, researchers and adventurers – everyone came to Jerusalem. Institutions were established here, bringing with them modernity and known for their effectiveness, such as the Austrian “post”. Learn about the Austrians and the institutions they founded in the city, personalities from the community who were active in Jerusalem, and the contribution of the Austrian Jews to the Jewish Quarter.
Additionally, hear about the visit of Kaiser Franz Joseph, examine the original model of Jerusalem made by Stephan Illes, view the Austrian post building, tour among sites in the Jewish quarter connected to the contribution of Austrian Jews, and tell the famous legend about the donation of the dome of the Tiferet Israel Synagogue. Finish by visiting the Austrian hospice and ascending to its rooftop for an expansive observation point on the Old City.
