In 1492, the Jews were expelled from Spain; many migrated to the Ottoman Empire, while others settled in North Africa, Italy, and other regions. With the Ottoman conquest of the Land of Israel, Jerusalem opened its doors to them. From the 16th century onward, the Spanish Jewish community became the largest and most influential in the city. In the Jewish Quarter, the dominant language was Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), the music was romansas, and traditional foods included borquitos and huevos jemendos.
This tour traces the Sephardic community in the Jewish Quarter, exploring its leaders, families, holiday traditions, and everyday life. We will pass by the Ramban Synagogue, the Beit El Yeshiva, and the four Sephardic synagogues, concluding at the Old City Courtyard Museum, where we will learn more about daily life in the quarter.
Meeting Point: Zion Gate
End Point: Old City Courtyard Museum (we will walk together to Jaffa Gate)
