Tour in small neighborhoods with big stories. Start in the Nahalat Zion neighborhood, founded in the 1890s by residents mainly from the Aleppo and Urfa Jewish communities. Hear about the establishment of the neighborhood, and about Abraham Albert Antèbi, director of the Alliance Israélite Universelle, who was a key figure in the neighborhood’s early days.
Afterwards, visit the Ades Synagogue, one of the most beautiful synagogues in Jerusalem that has undergone a renovation of its spectacular murals in the last few years. The synagogue paintings were done by calligrapher and Bezalel artist Ya’akov Stark, commemorated in a giant mural next to the synagogue. Learn about Stark, about the paintings and their restoration, and about the traditions of the Aleppo synagogue, most famously the Shirat HaBaqashot.
From there we continue with a short visit to the Neve Bezalel neighborhood, planned in the 1920s as an artists colony, under the initiative of Boris Schatz. Walk in the paths of the artists and craftsmen connected to Bezalel Academy who lived in the neighborhood.
Tour inspired by the exhibit “Jerusalem School”, presented in the new gallery at the Tower of David Jerusalem Museum and at HaMiffal center for art and culture, in honor of 100 years of Jerusalem art.
