North of Damascus Gate stands the monumental building of St. Paul’s Hospice. Inaugurated in 1910 as a German Catholic guesthouse, the building was transformed with the arrival of the British Mandate, when it became home to government offices. From a pilgrims’ hostel in Jerusalem, it became the beating heart of the British administration in Palestine.

But in June 1921, beneath the very eyes of the British authorities, the sense of order and security was shattered when a body was discovered in a nearby water cistern and the police launched an investigation.

What happened? In this tour, based on new research, we will travel back to Jerusalem in the early years of the British Mandate-a time when the security and judicial systems in Palestine were still taking shape and threats were widespread.

We will visit the scenes of the events and uncover the secrets of a case that shook not only Jerusalem’s residents and the Mandate government, but also reached the floor of the British Parliament-yet ultimately disappeared from the pages of history.
